Spiritual Grounds at Pine Grove- We are pleased with the opening of the meditation garden (photos and a more complete write up can be found here).  The next phase, the Bell Tower, is currently being planned.

Spiritual Grounds Story

I took my seat in the audience, waiting for the unveiling of the Spiritual Grounds rendering by Dr. Kim Sessums.  I didn’t know Dr. Sessums and wasn’t familiar with his work, but felt grateful to simply be part of the ceremony.  I listened intently, wondering what a successful artist might understand about addiction.

I wondered…because I knew about addiction and all its destruction.  I knew what it felt like to be utterly lost and broken.  I knew the pain I had caused my family.  I knew what it felt like to disappoint your own child.  To see the disappointment in the eyes of your parents.  I knew, because I had walked that failing road.

And here, today, I sit because I walked down a road to recovery as well.  As Dr. Sessums revealed his work today, my heart stopped.  There, in the curves and figures was my recovered life.  His work captured the essence of an addict’s journey which is built upon the combined efforts of a whole community.  As I listened to plans for bells that would ring out to announce an addict’s small step towards recovery, I shivered.

This place.  This spiritual place and his work knew what we addicts know.  That each small step is a victory, worthy of celebration and recognition.  As I stood to leave, I knew that any patient who would visit Spiritual Grounds would feel the same.  It is a connection to a renewed life of health and healing.

Overview

The name says it all.

Spiritual.  Inspired by the promise of healing.

Grounds.  A community space located in Hattiesburg at the corner of Richburg Road and 28th Avenue Extension on the Pine Grove campus.

Spiritual Grounds was originally conceived through the collaborative efforts of Forrest General Hospital, Pine Grove and the experiences of patients themselves.  Designed for meditation and movement, Spiritual Grounds strives to symbolize an urban sanctuary of healing and hope.

A series of elements serve as the backbone of the space, beginning with The Entry where Dr. Kim Sessums’ Circle of Healing scuplture introduces visitors to the idea of struggle and connection.

The labyrinth, designed with colored stones and bridges, represents an opportunity for self-reflection while the chapel offers another alternate space for meditation. Natural elements of fire and water are celebrated through The Fire Circle and fountains.  The Fire Circle draws individuals together to share stories or to gather in fellowship.  Throughout The Spiritual Grounds, the sound of bells can be heard from The Bell Towers.  Representing the first three steps in the 12-step programs, the bells are rung by a patient to celebrate his accomplishment.

The Spiritual Grounds promises to be a community-wide space that fosters personal growth and community pride.
